How to Decide Between a Freelancer and an Agency

Neither option is universally better. Here are specific questions to check which one actually fits what you need.

1. Check How Defined the Project Is

Well-defined, unlikely to grow in scope: a freelancer often fits. Spans multiple disciplines, or likely to expand over time: an agency usually fits better.

2. Check Who Manages the Relationship

Comfortable managing the timeline and coordination yourself: freelancer works. Want someone else coordinating that for you: agency.

3. Ask What Happens in Twelve Months

This is the question that matters most. If the freelancer moves on or becomes unreachable, what happens to your site? If you’d need ongoing strategic input, not just execution, an agency is built for that continuity in a way a single freelancer usually isn’t.

4. Decide on Fit, Not Just Price

The cheaper option upfront isn’t automatically the better one if it doesn’t match what the project actually needs over time.
